Design Concepts

The fabric design would be considered too crafty and too hard to replicate and the paper furniture is far too large to fit within the brief which is why the food scraps idea is the one to focus on. The food scraps design is the most suitable but there is lots of development that needs to occur. The outer shell needs to be researched further to see if there are odours etc as hygiene in hospitals would be questionable. it also needs to be decorated to make it joyful for the receiver and should use recycled and environmentally friendly material.

Food scraps are great because they're sustainable, i'd be worried that it would smell in the hospital room tho. It is good because the flowers done just die after a few weeks - the plant will be a constant reminder of someone love. It would have to be aimed at gardeners though, i would definitely find the extra work involved in taking care of it annoying. At least nothing has to be added. Its good :)

I love the simplicity of the recycled pot plant idea. Plants are always good gifts, especially for a sick person. I think the key will be somehow combining the get-well-soon card with the plant or pot packaging so perhaps think about the range of plants you could offer. What plant would be most pleasant, smell the best, look the best?

The project is pretty well thought through, try to add the reasons behind why the materials were chosen. Also, show the whole process of purchase to receive to planting the gift. Furthermore, to highlight the principals used, try and dull the Okala design wheel out and only highlight the design principals that are being used in the project. With the rational, 2 pages of sketches.. and flip the pages of the Okala wheel to explain how they are used. Finally, explore the form of the pot and the dividers.

Loving the concept and actually find it hard to critique as everything has been thought off from flowers to the actually pot itself. The only suggestion I can is maybe refine the aesthetics of the design to make it a more organic shape… maybe.

I love the concept so much. Everything is very well planned. I also really like the idea of the card with seeds. Maybe just think about creating a smoother looking form for the pot.

Final Concept

It was after a lot of research and loads of experiments that I came to the conclusion that a square shape would be the most practical and aesthetic shape. As seen in the document below, all the materials have been chosen for specific reasons including the card... that can be eaten!!

And this was the final product...

  1. Douglas, your blog is impossible to navigate.

Your project is really good though!! I love that the design allows the recipient to plant the gift and remember how special it was for years to come, when a bunch of flowers would usually die. The design has also made sure that the recipient finds it easy to plant even if they dont have much gardening experience which is great. You communicated your product really well, and I dont really have any advice on how you could make it better. Well done :)

  2. It is a great design in terms of gift giving. I love the "green" aspect to it. It is very naturalistic and earthy. Perfect for people that love gardening. I liked your presentation. OVerall good effort

  3. This idea alone looks really great and with the design style, its ability to be ecofriendly whilst looking good enough to be a gift makes it a really well designed product. It's manufacturing and end of life is also an interesting factor which is well researched and well refined.
